Archers in the History

Battle of Azincourt in 1415

The fact of having very many archers is one of the reasons of the victory of the English army led by Henri V.

There were other reasons with the French defeat:

  • the armament of long range was made up almost only of crossbows: precise and powerful, but extremely slow to implement

  • the softened battle field obstructed the riders
  • considerably the indiscipline of the French knights: lapse of memory of the lessons of the preceding battles (Crécy, Poitiers)…
  • the failure with the rules of knighthood on behalf of the English, who do not have to respect one of the principal rules, “no one does not have the right to cut down noble with an arrow or another projectiles, the weapon of the pleutre should not make run noble blood”
