Archdiocese of Seoul

The archdiocese of Seoul is a jurisdiction of the Catholic church, canonically set up the March 10th 1962 by the pope Jean XXIII. Its archbishop is Mgr Nicolas Cheong-Jin-Suk, which sits at the Cathédrale Myeong-Dong.

Previously, this diocese had been set up in apostolic Vicariat of Korea the September 9th 1831 by the pope Gregoire XVI, and it took the apostolic name of vicariate of Seoul in 1911.

This metropolitan Siège covers most of the territory of the South Korea and North Korea, including 606 km ² in the metropolis of Seoul. There is more than 1.247.000 catholics in Seoul, that is to say 12,5% of the total population. Their proportion increased these last years much, because they were only 2,6% in 1970. 836 priests carry their ministry in 197 parishes. In 2004, this archdiocese yields territory to create the diocese of Uijongbu.

History

The history of Korea is marked by the arrival of the missionaries, made for the first time in 1784 and 1791. There were persecutions during the 19th century, but also much from martyrs, 103 on the whole.

The Korean thought valsait between the Néo-confucianisme and the Bouddhisme, and in a context of major social changes, the study and the practice of Catholicism were started with intellectuals.

There were only 10.000 Christians in 1876, but this number multiplied thereafter, with a first seminar builds in 1892. Ordinary people convert and translate religious works of Chinese into Korean.

The new religion easily integrates the Korean traditional values of honesty, filial devotion and chastity, but it did not correspond to the ideology of the State, the Confucianism, from where persecutions.

The first apostolic vicars of Seoul are members of the Foreign missions of Paris and they are of French origin until in 1967. The mass is celebrated in Korean since the council the Vatican II, and the Church of Seoul develops during the Années 1960 and the Années 1970

In the suffragan diocese of Pyongyang, one ceased naming bishops since the end Second world war because of tyrannical persecutions.
