Archdiocese of Lyon

The metropolitan archdiocese of Lyon and Vienna is one of the twenty-three archdioceses of France. Its seat is with Lyon, the old capital of Gaules, prefecture of the area the Rhone-Alps. The archbishop of Lyon carries the title of Primacy of Gaules.

History

0rigines

Created as of IIe century, the diocese of Lyon east one of oldest of France. Its first évèque was Saint Pothin. He suffered from persecutions of Marc-Aurèle in 177 One counts 48 martyrs whose évèque Pothin and Sainte Blandine they are the Martyrs of Lyon. Saint Irenee becomes évèque then.

Modern period

In 1970, the Diocèse of Saint-Etienne was created by scission of the diocese of Lyon.

Rite

With the publication of the bubble '' Quo primum '' which followed the council of Thirty in XVIe century, it could keep its own rite, the Lyons Rite. At the XVIIIe century, the Lyons rite was deeply altered and became the rite " romano-lyonnais" who was celebrated by all the priests incardinés in the diocese except for certain religious orders.
