Archdiocese of Lyon
The metropolitan archdiocese of Lyon and Vienna is one of the twenty-three archdioceses of France. Its seat is with Lyon, the old capital of Gaules, prefecture of the area the Rhone-Alps. The archbishop of Lyon carries the title of Primacy of Gaules.
He belongs to the ecclesiastical districts oldest of France: indeed, located in the valley of the Rhone, Lugdunum business with the first Christian missionaries of Greek origin had quickly. Thus Saint-Irenee, 2nd bishop of Lyon is known to be disciple of Saint-Polycarpe, itself disciple of Midsummer's Day the evangelist.
The évêchés suffragan ones are Annecy, Belley-Ars, Chambéry-Maurienne-and-Tarentaise, Grenoble, Saint-Etienne, Valence and Viviers. Diocese since the 2nd century, archdiocese since IIIe century, it bears since October 6th, 1822 the name of archdiocese of Lyon and Vienna.
Geography
The diocese extends on the department from the the Rhone with some extensions on the departments from the the Loire- Archidiaconé from Midsummer's Day (Lyons agglomeration)

- Archidiaconé from Notre-Dame (Roannais in the Loire)

History

Created as of IIe century, the diocese of Lyon east one of oldest of France. Its first évèque was Saint Pothin. He suffered from persecutions of Marc-Aurèle in 177 One counts 48 martyrs whose évèque Pothin and Sainte Blandine they are the Martyrs of Lyon. Saint Irenee becomes évèque then.>with compléter<
Modern period
In 1970, the Diocèse of Saint-Etienne was created by scission of the diocese of Lyon.
Rite
With the publication of the bubble '' Quo primum '' which followed the council of Thirty in XVIe century, it could keep its own rite, the Lyons Rite. At the XVIIIe century, the Lyons rite was deeply altered and became the rite " romano-lyonnais" who was celebrated by all the priests incardinés in the diocese except for certain religious orders. At the time of the reforms of 1969, it was replaced by the rite known as of Paul VI. Today the rite romano-Lyonese is maintained by the company of the priests of Saint-Irenee (known as company of the Carthusian monks), friendly priests rested by the Fesch cardinal at the beginning of the XIXe century.
