Archdiocese of Dakar

The archdiocese of Dakar , with the Senegal, was canonically set up the September 14th 1955 by the pope Pie XII. Previously, it carried the apostolic title of vicariate of Sénégambie of 1863 to 1936 then of apostolic vicariate of Dakar. This archdiocese is currently directed by Mgr Theodore-Adrien Sarr.

In 1897, vicariate sénégambien yields part of sound of the territory to set up the apostolic prefecture of the French Guinea, then in 1939 another part to create the prefecture of Ziguinchor and in 1957 for the prefecture of Kaolack. The Diocèse of Thiès is set up in 1969 starting from parishes of the archbishop's palace of Dakar.

Catholicism progresses quickly in the metropolis of Dakar, because the catholics were only 3% of the total population in 1949, whereas they are 14% today. There is more than 475.000 catholic diocesans and 151 priests in thirty-eight parishes in Dakar, but the rapid growth of the number of faithful is not filled by the number of priests admitted with priesthood. There are on the whole 570 monks and nuns in Dakar.
