Roles and statute
The archbishop of Canterbury occupies four main roles nowadays:

Origins
Testimonys suggest that there were three archbishop's palaces during the Roman domination: London, York and Caerlon, an ancient city of the South of Wales. However, during the 5th century and 6th century, the country was directed by the Anglo-Saxon , pagan. Kingdoms that they installed there, it is that of the Kent which had the links most reinforced with the culture and the European trade. The first archbishop of Canterbury was Saint Augustin which arrived in Kent in 597, sent by the Pape Gregoire Ier for a mission in England. He was accepted by the king Ethelbert, during his conversion to Christianity towards 598. Since then, the archbishops of Canterbury are appointed like the occupants of the armchair of St Augustin.
Before the rupture with the papal authority at the 16th century, the Church of England forming integral part of the Church of continental Western Europe. Since the rupture, the Church of England, an established national church, is always regarded as a share of the tradition of the Western Catholic church at the same time as l'" Church mère" communion Anglican, even if it does not have any more a relationship with the Saint Sits.
Province and Diocese
The archbishop of Canterbury exerts a metropolitan jurisdiction on the Province of Canterbury which includes/understands 30 of the 44 dioceses of the Church of England (the fourteen remainders, in the North of England, belong to the province of York). Formerly, the four dioceses of Wales also fell under the jurisdiction from the Province from Canterbury. But, in 1920, the Welsh dioceses were transferred under the authority from the Église from Wales. The archbishop of Canterbury has a provincial and ceremonial curia made up of the bishops of high-row of his province. The bishop of London, the monk of the Church moreover high-row except for the two archbishops, is used as a senior of the Province as Canterbury, the bishop of Winchester as chancellor, the bishop of Lincoln as Vice-Chancelier and the bishop of Rochester like carrier of the cross.
With the primatie of the archbishop of Canterbury on that of York, one owes with the first a priority in terms of honor compared to the other archbishops of the Communion Anglicans. He is recognized like primus inter pares , first among the equal ones. However, the archbishop of Canterbury does not exert any authority direct on the provinces apart from England.
The archbishop has, today, four bishops " suffragants" i.e., of the bishops subordinates to a metropolitan bishop.
- the bishop of Dover, to which one gives the subsidiary title of bishop in Canterbury and the capacity to act almost as the bishop diocesan of the diocese of Canterbury since the archbishop is generally occupied by his national duties and international.
- the bishop of Maidstone which is a second assistant of the diocese
- the bishop of Ebbsfleet which is a " provincial episcopal visitor" for all the province of Canterbury from which the goal is rather to visit the parishes of the province which have evil to accept the services of their local bishop who took part in the ordination of women.
- the bishop of Richborough which has the same role as that of Ebbsfleet.
