Arch channel of Burgundy
The vault of the channel of Burgundy is a tunnel of 3333 m located at Pouilly-in-Auxois.
Built starting from 1775, the Canal of Burgundy connects the the Seine to the the Saone. The watershed between the basin of the Seine and that of the Rhone is located in the area of Pouilly. It is besides in Pouilly, in long the 3333 meters length underground (also called " the voƻte") that the channel passes from the one to the other.
During more than 7 years, miners dug this underground.
For the marines, one did not have less than 10 a.m. to cross it. This is why, in 1867, one installed warping with vapor geared by an immersed chain. In 1893, one replaced it by a electric Toueur, and the way was tiny room to 2 a.m. only. Another difficulty had to be surmounted: the vault not being high enough, the boats charged touched the top of the vault. In 1910 was found the solution: one brought into service a conveying vat on which seat the barge took. After having emptied part of the water contained in the vat, the boat was on a sufficiently low level to be dealt with by the warping one. Nowadays, the rare barges only cross. For that, it is necessary to lower the level of all the Bief.
