Arch-the-battle

Arch-the-Battles is a common French, located in the department of the Seine-Maritime and the area High-Normandy.

The inhabitants are the Arquais .

Geography

Arch-the-battle, whose climate is influenced by the proximity of the Manche, is located at 6 km of Dieppe. The rivers formed an overcome undulating landscape of chalky plates. Castle of Arch-the-Battles, one can observe three principal valleys: valleys of the Eaulne and the Béthune, which surround the plate of Aliermont, and the valley of the Varenne

These three Rivière S, which occurs with the accesses of the buttonhole of the Pays of Bray, are found on the territory of the commune to form the coastal Fleuve named “the Arques”, whose mouth constitutes the port of Dieppe.

History

Arch indicates the arches of a bridge on the Arques (the river).

  • 15 - September 29th 1589: Bataille of Arch delivered by Henri IV against the Ligueurs carried out by the duke of Mayenne.
  • Arques was Chef-lieu canton during the Révolution (of 1790 to the 8 Pluviôse An IX (January 28th 1801)).
  • 1882 : Arques takes the name of Arch-the-Battles in order to cure frequent confusions with Arques in the Pas-de-Calais.

Places and monuments

  • the church Our-Lady-in-the Assomption (1515 - 1633) of Gothic style blazing, and its Organ installed on the Jubé of Renaissance style. The church of Arch is one of rare in France to have preserved its Jubé, after the Concile of Thirty had recommended the removal of these ends of chorus. A Orgue nine was installed on jubé in 1998.

  • the Castle located at the confluence of three valleys, it was several times besieged since Guillaume the Bastard one (1053) with Henri IV (1584)
  • the industrial site of Viscose - the chimneys
  • the School complex built in 1935 by the Architecte Georges Thurin (registered with the additional Inventory of the M.H.)
