Antiquity
It was a country of villages and it had little direct importance in the Greek policy, although Mantinée and Tégée were frays with the expansion Spartan, in particular at fifth century BC
For a long time Arcadie did not have a central government: later, one included/understood the utility of a center, and at this point in time was built Megalopolis, capital of all Arcadie (370 before J. - C.).
This country was initially controlled by kings, between-others:
- Stymphalos
- Lycurgue
- Aristocrat II, after which the royalty was abolished, (671 before J. - C.), because it had betrayed the Messéniens of which it was the ally.
It is of this area that Évandre left to found a colony in Italy, near the mount Aventin.
Under Épaminondas created for itself a confederation arcadienne at fourth century BC against Sparte, and it joined the Achaean Ligue later, to which it gave one of its larger generals, Philopœmen.
It followed, after the catch of Corinthe in 146 before J. - C. the fate of the remainder of Greece, and, during the division of the Roman empire, belonged to the Roman Empire of the East.
It was detached from the Greek empire, with the Morée, by the Vénitiens in 1204, and was conquered in 1470 by the Othoman , which preserved it until the insurrection of 1822, following which it was integrated in the Royaume of Greece.
Mythology
Arcadie preserved remarkable myths and worships. The gods Side and Hermes are particularly associated with the area.
A tradition wants that Zeus was born on the Mont Lycaos.
In the famous Banquet of Plato, Socrate intervenes at the end to expose a thesis which he states to hold of Diotime, priestess arcadienne.
Thereafter, Arcadie, wild region where human sacrifices were practiced (according to a new communication of Bernard Sergent) would have become little by little the symbol of a golden age filled of idylles between shepherds and/or shepherds and shepherdesses, that is to say a laughing world where the pastoral ones would have constituted the principal musical entertainment. This myth influenced a considerable part of the music and operas baroques ( “It pastor fido” and its misadventures, for example). This representation of Old of gold is at the origin of speculations in favor of a kind of restoration of century which preceded the French revolution. See work of Andre Delaporte.
Arcadie in Antiquity
Arcadie is an area of Greece which, in Latin and Hellenic bucolic poetry, was represented like the country of happiness, the ideal country. Ancient poetry, like Virgile in Bucoliques or Ovide in the Records, described Arcadie like a place primitive and idyllic populated shepherds, alive harmonizes some with nature. Thereafter, Arcadie remained this symbol of a golden age, a laughing world where the pastoral ones constitute the principal musical entertainment.
