Hydrology
The flow of Arbas was observed for one 40 years period (1968-2007), with Castelbiague, locality of the department of the Haute-Garonne, located at four kilometers upstream of the confluence with the Salat. The catchment area of the river is there of 98 km ², that is to say nearly 90% of the totality of this last which makes 110 km ².
The interannual medium flow or module of the river with Castelbiague is of 1,79 m ³ a second.
Arbas presents seasonal fluctuations of flow moderate. The high waters are held in winter and in spring and are characterized by average monthly flows oscillating between 2,05 and 2,95 m ³ a second, from December to May included (maximum in April). The low waters take place in summer and at the beginning of the autumn, with monthly flows going from 0,76 to 1,11 m ³ a second July at October (floor of 0,755 m ³ in August, which remains very consistent).
The VCN3 can fall until 0,160 m ³, in the event of dry quinquennial period, that is to say 160 liters a second (see note).
In addition, the risings can be very important. The QIX 2 and QIX 5 are worth respectively 49 and 68 m ³ a second. The QIX 10 or calculated flow of decennial rising is worth 80 m ³ a second, while the QIX 20 is assembled to 92 m ³, and the QIX 50 to 110 m ³ a second (see note). The recorded maximum instantaneous flow was of 112 m ³ a second on May 10th, 1991, while the value maximum day laborer was of 61,9 m ³ a second on October 5th, 1992. By comparing the first of these figures with the values of the various QIX of the river, it appears that this rising was of order cinquantennal and thus rather exceptional, because statistically intended to repeat itself only twice per century approximately.
The Lame of water past in the basin of Arbas is of 579 millimetres annually, which is high, very largely higher than the average overall of France, but definitely lower than the whole of the catchment area of Salat (858 millimetres). The specific Débit (or Qsp) consequently assembles to a solid 18,3 liters a second and per square kilometer of basin.
