Araya

Araya (also spelled Aaraiya, Aaraya, Areya or Areiya ) is a city of the Lebanon located 12 km at the East of Beirut on the road of Damas (Syria).

Geographical location

Hill in the caza/district of Baabda, in the area of the Mount Lebanon, Araya counts 3000 inhabitants (census of 1999) on a surface of 3,26 km ².

It is located at an average altitude of 500 m and fact face with the Sannine (mountain of 2.000 m altitude). It is surrounded by forests primarily made up of oaks and pines. Some traces of cultures remain in particular of olive-trees, fig trees, vines, of mulberry trees. or of old agricultural cultures.

The climate is not very wet and moderate in summer and very cold the winter.

History

Inhabited since XVe century, Araya counts a few hundreds of farmers and farmers when in 1860 the village completely is set fire to and ransacked. The oldest files and documents thus go up at that time.

Christian village, Araya is to 90% catholic and 10% orthodoxe.

All the inhabitants or almost are owners of their houses and their agricultural land. The village becomes increasingly residential since the end of insulation due to the war.

The relationships to the other communities are rather commercial and social and only sometimes political.

Economy

Forsaking agriculture, the inhabitants are mainly craftsmen and for the remainder of the civils servant, employees or tradesmen. Much also moves towards the neighbouring cities to exert their trade.

Good number of young people are expatrient towards other Arab countries to work in the sector of the building especially for the moulding of the decorative plaster.
