Araux is a common French, located in the department of the Yrénées-Atlantiques and the area Aquitaine.

Hydrography

The grounds of the commune are sprinkled by the Gave d' Oloron (affluent of the Gave of Pau) and by its tributary, the Lausset.
Two affluents of the brook of Harcellane (tributary of Lausset), Cassou dou Mud and the brook of Lescuncette, also cross the commune.

Toponymy

The toponym Araux appears in the forms Araus (1223, titles of Taragone), Feels-Angne Araus (about 1350, notaries of Lucq-with-Béarn), lo paged of Araus (1376, military watch of Béarn), Araus-Susoo (1385, censier of Béarn), Feels-Johan Araux (1411, notaries of Navarrenx) and Araus-Susson (1547, reformation of Béarn).

History

Paul Raymond note which the commune counted a laic abbey, vassal of the Viscount of Béarn.
In 1385, Araux counted 27 fires and was a dependence of the baronnie of Jasses.
