Aramits is a common French, located in the department of the Yrénées-Atlantiques and the area Aquitaine.
Its inhabitants is called Aramitsiens.

Geography

Toponymy

The toponym Aramits appears in the forms Aramiçs (1270, titles of the valley of Ossau), Aramitz in Baratons (1376, contract of Luntz), Irimitz (1383, contract of Luntz), Feels-Vinsens Aramitz (1606, insinuations of the diocese of Oloron).

It is of Basque origin, of aran (= valley), with the suffix - itz rental, i.e. confluent place of the valleys or , in reference to the position of the village to the junction of the Green of Arette and the Green of Aramits.

History

Aramits is the old chief town of the valley of Barétous.
Paul Raymond note the existence of two laic, vassal abbeys of the Viscount of Béarn: Abadie-Susan and Abadie-Jusan.
In 1385, Aramits counted 52 fires and depended on the Bailliage of Oloron.
In 1790, the Canton of Aramits also included Esquiule.

The economy of the commune is primarily directed towards agriculture and the breeding (bovines and sheep).

Culture and inheritance

Religious heritage

Parish church Saint-Vincent: it is an old laic abbey of which there remains a gate of the 17th century. The old church was demolished in 1880. From 1884 to 1886 were held the building work of the new church, of style romano-Byzantine.

Equipment

The commune has an elementary school as well as a council school of music.

Personalities related to the commune

  • Aramis, of its true name Henri d' Aramitz, is the son of Charles d' Aramitz who was Sergeant to the Company of the Mousquetaires.
