Araméens

The Araméens are ancient people of the the Middle East whose heritage - in very first place the language - is submitted at the time modern within communities ethnico-nuns of the same name. Araméens modern are identified or are identified also like Syriaques, Assyrian, Assyro-Chaldéens, ChaldoAssyriens or Araméo-Assyro-Chaldéo-Syriaques. Since the beginning of the 20th century, communities araméennes settled in America, Europe or Australia.

Ancient history

Modern history

At the same time as they carried out the Armenian genocide, the Turks killed approximately 1.000.000 of Araméens in the North of Syria, in Antioche (which were given to the Turks by France at the time of the French mandate), and in the Mounts of Taurus (annexed by the Turks for the period of the French mandate). The main reason of this genocide was a too great embarrassment caused by the Christians of the East, acting as elite within a Turkish company undergoing the takeovers of the empire, but also a total hatred of the Othoman government towards all the Eastern Christians. A little later this genocide was quickly forgotten with the Middle-East taking into consideration consequence and Jewish genocide that this one was going to have on the life of the nonJewish people of the Middle East after 1948 (creation of the Jewish State). Consequently the Arab and Palestinian cause preached the " cause; araméenne" , each one claiming itself Arab before claiming araméen or syriaque. The lapse of memory of this genocide was reinforced by the Arab and nationalist ideals socialist Arab which will know an apogee in the Fifties even 60.

Identity

The question of the ethnic identification is discussed within/community (S) araméenne (S). Part of Araméens prefer to continue Syriaques, another Assyrian. Others, like Chaldéens, privilege the religious affiliation rather.
