Aragosaurus

General information

Aragosaurus lived with the Crétacé inferior (Barremien (130 to 125 million years)), in Spain (Overdraft with Rioja) there are 125 million years. Although remainders of dinosaurs had already been discovered in Spain, it is the first species of dinosaur described in this country.

Etymology

Its name means lizard of Aragon name of the Spanish province of Aragon.

Anatomy

Aragosaurus was a large herbivorous quadruped which was approximately 18 m long and weighed 28 tons. Like the others sauropodes, it had a long neck, a long powerful tail, a small head and a body bulky. It resembled the Camarasaurus much. The first caudal vertebrae are robust and present widenings in the neuronal spines which who had to be useful for anchoring of the ligaments which consolidate the higher area of the base of the column. only species owes its name (ischiaticus) with the hardening of the hip which is reflected mainly mainly in the great development of the isquion. The arms of Aragosaurus are more courts that the rear limbs, but not as much as it common to is camarasauridés. The femur reaches one length of 1,4 Mr.

Inventory of the found fossils

It is represented by a partial fossil discovered in Spain. It was named by Sanz, Buscalioni, Casanovi and Santafe in 1987. The standard species is A. ischiaticus.
