Aracar

The volcano Aracar , is an active stratovolcano but at rest currently, which is in the Argentinian province of Salta (Department of Los the Andes).

Its altitude is of 6  095 meters.

Activity

Its crater of young pace has a diameter of 1-1,5 km, and contains a small lake. The volcano was built during three eruptive cycles dating from the Pliocène. The andesitic stratovolcano is with the top of a dome of lava. There are lava flows preserved well at the base of the volcano, under the 4.500 meters of altitude.

The last eruption dates from the year 1993. See satellite photo in

Situation

The Aracar volcano is with a score of kilometers in the North-East of the volcano Arizaro and to more or less 40 kilometers with the east-north-east of the Socompa. It dominates the Salar d' Arizaro, located at about fifteen kilometers in the south-east, and towards which it very often let run broad floods of lava.

In the west one finds a series of three volcanos located 22-25 kilometers from his crater and called north in the south: the Pular (6  224 m), and Pajonales (5  958 m) in Chilean territory, and the Salín (6  022 m) at the border enter the two countries. Together with these three volcanos and the Arizaro (6  224 m), Aracar delimit a rather vast basin occupied by the Salar de Pular.
