The Arab thorough-bred is a horse of race known for its endurance.
Origins
The origins of the Arab thorough-bred are badly known and prone to many debates and any consensus could not get clear. A thing is allowed all the same by all: this race very old, Eastern and is forged by the hard life in desert or semi-desert zones .Starting from the work of selection of the Persian dynasty of the Sassanides, the arabo-Moslem women will create the Arab horses which will astonish so much the first cross ones by their agility.
The first Arab thorough-breds arrived in France at the 8th century at the time of the battles of Poitiers. With 12th and 13th centuries, the Ordre of the Temple envisaged to equip its Master and his dignitaries with four horses including one turcoman, in other words an Arab thorough-bred. A few centuries later, Napoleon Bonaparte worked to promote the race while enabling him to reproduce in pure race. Hitherto, it was used only in crossing.
At the 18th century, some standards were imported and crossed with mares autochtones of Great Britain. The products of these crossings gave the English thorough-breds.
Three Arab standards are particularly present in the race English thorough-bred:
- Byerley Turk , imported Turkey in the Years 1700.
- Darlei Arabian , born in 1705. It joined the stable of Mr. Darley in England.
- Godolphin Arabian , born in 1724, was offered to Louis XV by the Bey of Tunis.
Father of all the races, the sharp blood of these glorious ancestors runs in the veins of almost all the races of modern light horses. The Arab thorough-bred was used through the ages to refine and improve of many races.
Among the famous stud farms, it is necessary to quote Janow Podlaski (Poland), Tersky Stud (Russia), Om el Arab (Germany) and Crabbet Park (England). In this last the " lived; horse of the siècle" , Skowronek , whose line produced more than 1000 champions in 15 years. To note finally that the United States has alone nearly 90% of the horses of this race.
The desert
Its characteristics as its homogeneity were already well established towards the end of the 1st millenium, under the Abasside dynasty of the Caliphs of Baghdad. The desert forged the Arab horse. Almost thousand years of wandering life in hostile environment returned enduring it and sober. Then the life at the sides of the Bedouins led it to traverse long distances in little time. It gained speed and the robustness there.In the desert the dunes can follow one another as far as the eye can see, under a torrid heat followed by the icy night. But the desert also consists of stony plates and mountains at the snow-covered tops. This medium as hostile as is varied and water misses it remains the greatest concern. Also, the horses which live there must be satisfied with little, some grass tufts that and there, some dates, the thin pastures found with the liking of the ways. When they live with the men, this food can be supplemented with milk of chamelle.
Become domestic, the Arab thorough-bred is often raised by the women and the children when it is Poulain. At the adulthood, there will live close to the tent, remaining often saddle and blocked. This promiscuity returns it very near to the man of the desert.
Contrary to a spread opinion, the warriors of the desert often assembled mares, calmer and less impetuous than the entireties, too prompt to give alarm while neighing. In the desert the nomads gave sometimes meat dried to the thorough-bred Arab that helped them to keep force.
Characteristics
These horses are fast, handy, courageous and resistant. The Arab thorough-bred has a very fine skin and shows itself on a little chatouilleux occasion; for grooming, a rubber currycomb is preferable with metal and the stopper must be last carefully on the significant points: hips, belly, inner face of the thighs and head.- 1,45 to 1,55 m on average.
- All the dresses are allowed, the black dress being rare.
- It is characterized by a silky hair and the smoothness from its fasteners, an arched neck, a particularly expressive head. Its chest is deep and open, its rather short and broad back, its croup is high and generally horizontal. The fastener of the tail, high with a raised port are characteristic of the race. Its members are fine and solid, with long and right bulges. The head of the Arab thorough-bred is dry: the framework is clearly marked, the veins are guessed under the skin. The broad face is overcome by two well drawn aside ears and nicely drawn. Its short chamfer, often concave, is completed by a fine nose with very open naseaux.
