Ar Falz

Ar Falz (“ the sickle ”) is a Breton organization progressist and layman, created to develop and support the Enseignement of Breton the. It is also the name of the review published by this association.

Origins and claims

Association is created in January 1933 by Yann Sohier, allured by the example of the USSR which recognizes with its people the right to practice their language. The review of the same name is the “monthly bulletin of the laic teachers in favor of teaching of Breton”. Managing is Fant Rozec (Meavenn). Ar Falz is supported by Marcel Cachin. Kerlann is one of the principal collaborators of the review as of its beginnings, in particular for the articles of history and mathematics into Breton, and will be selected like successor of Yann Sohier, with died of this last in 1935.

Ar Falz militates for the teaching of the Breton, regarded by the French administration as the “languages of the idiots and hens”. Its program is summarized in its first bulletin of connection:

Claim of the teaching of Breton like " common language of the enseignement".
Rejection of the method known as " of French by the breton" : method recommended by the regionalistic ones and the clergy, pedagogically impracticable at the elementary school, considering the extreme differences between the genius of the two languages.
Rejection of a bilingual system giving the priority to French, system which would have as a result only to isolate the Breton people in a language from reduced culture.

In 1945, Ar Falz proposes to take again to the laymen of Brittany the petition stopped by the war, in favor of the Breton language teaching. In particular, the countryside " Ar brezhoneg er skol " (" the Breton one with the école") was supported by a very great number of Breton communes. But as many other initiatives (the such large popular petition of Emgleo Breiz which gathers several hundreds of thousands of signatures in 1967, this initiave met only the contempt and the indifference on behalf of the French public authorities.

Dormancy then the alarm clock

The movement is put in sleep during the Second world war.

Once this one finished, association is started again by the militants resulting from the resistance, such Armand Keravel and Rene-Yves Creston with the support of Marcel Cachin of the PCF. During a time, its president will be Per-Jakez Helias.

In 1950, Ar Falz takes part in the creation of Kendalc' H, a confederation of Celtic circles, and will be member of association Emgleo Breiz.

Ar Falz and Skol Vreizh since 1950

Whereas the Années 1950 see the agricultural revolution transforming the low-Breton company which passes from a Breton-speaking farming community to a company of French-speaking farmers, the Années 1960 and 1970 see the Breton culture losing its discredit due to a country culture thanks to the action of Glenmor, Gilles Servat, Alan Stivell and well of others.

Ar Falz then created Skol Vreizh (" the school bretonne") in order to create and publish material pedogic. Of Ar Falz supplement, Skol Vreizh will become an autonomous quarterly review. Skol Vreizh will become then the name of the publisher associated with Ar Falz; it will publish in particular a series of books in the collection Histoire of Brittany and the Celtic Countries , but also of the reference books in linguistics, such as the dictionaries and grammar of Francis Favereau.

In 1967, Ar Falz takes part in the creation of War 'L them (“ war Al them ”: “on the surface” -- initially surface to be beaten, become surface to be danced), one of the two confederations of Celtic circles with Kendalc' H.

In 1969, Ar Falz creates, with UDB and the JEB (Youth Breton coed) the movement Galv , committee of Action Progressist for the Breton Language.

Under the presidency of Paolig Combot, association Ar Falz and the publisher Skol Vreizh settle in 2002 in new buildings with the downtown area of Morlaix, with the old manufacture of Tabac rehabilitated.

Quotations

One of the Ar Falz posters proclaims “Back the killers of Breton, the assassins of the Breton heart, shame with the French Republic and lives the Soviet republic who recorded the intellectual level of the people and whose introduction in France will ensure the minorities the respect and freedom! ”.
