Approximation of Born-Oppenheimer
The approximation of Born - Oppenheimer , also known under the name of Adiabatic approximation , is a technique used in quantum Chimie.
The Mass of the Atomic nucleus being largely larger than the mass of the electron, the position of the core is taken as constant with this approximation of Born-Oppenheimer. The movement of the electrons can thus be regarded as uncoupled from the movement of the core, which allows the elimination of many terms of the equation of Schrödinger.
This technique, which provides a good approximation, became one of the foundations of the study of the molecular systems.
