Appoggiatura (foreign note)

See also: Appoggiatura

In tonal harmony, a appoggiatura is a foreign Note not prepared, usually placed on key period, or strong part of time, which is solved by joint movement on one of the real notes of the agreement.

During the period baroque, it was often noted by means of small notes - called notes of approval or ornaments - thus underlining its character of melody ornament - cf decorative appoggiaturas. It however has a harmonic power comparable with that of the delay to which it is related: one can indeed analyze it like a “ delay without preparation”.

There exists also an appoggiatura placed on weak time or weak part of time, and called weak appoggiatura : it is connected with a Passing note not prepared , and must be analyzed like such.

General information

  • the appoggiatura over key period is qualified of higher appoggiatura , when it goes down to the real note (examples B & C), of lower appoggiatura , when it goes up to the real Note (examples has & D), or, of appoggiatura doubles , when it is done at the same time with the higher note and the lower note, this in any order.

When the appoggiatura is higher, it must belong to the Tonalité. When it is lower, it can be accidentally faded so as to be located a Demi-ton diatonic below its resolvent note (D) example: it acts in this case, of a deterioration not causing any modulation. This deterioration makes it possible to avoid a bringing together of second minor - or its redoubling - simultaneous between the appoggiatura and the major third of the agreement.

the higher appoggiatura of the Life minor degree in is done on a nonfaded degree - a Sous-tonique instead of a sensitive , all in all -, this in order to avoid the interval of second increased located on VIIe degree.

  • Two or three appoggiaturas can be simultaneous (examples C & D).

  • Following the example delay, an appoggiatura can be quantified, especially when this one occurs with the low .

Realization of the appoggiatura

  • It is in theory preferable not to make hear the lining note appoggiaturée at the same time as the appoggiatura. So at the same time as the appoggiatura, one makes hear the note of his resolution, it is necessary to meet the following conditions:

- this note must be able to be doubled;
- one needs a distance from ninth at least between the two notes in question;
- the appoggiatura must occur at the upper part;
- the two parts concerned must be separated by a third part at least.
  • the appoggiatura of the third will be able thus to be made only if this one is not already doubled.

  • If one replaces the appoggiatura by the real Note, it is necessary that the realization remains correct. The appoggiatura, for example, cannot dissimulate two octaves or consecutive fifths.
