Apple Filing Protocol

The protocol AFP or AppleShare is a protocol of file sharing used on Macintosh. This protocol belongs to the presentation layer (or sixth layer) of OSI model, allowing a file-swapping for the computers equipped with the Operating systems Apple Mac OS X or Classic, just like the protocols SMB), NFS, ftp or WebDAV.

It currently supports the encoding Unicode for the file names, the permissions POSIX and the access control lists, the quota users of UNIX. It was the only protocol of native file-swapping on Mac OS 9, whereas Mac OS X makes it possible basic to use its competitors SMB and ftp.
