The department of the Apple-brandy (14) is a department French of the area Basse-Normandie.
History
The department was created with the French revolution, the March 4th 1790, pursuant to the law of the December 22nd 1789, starting from part of old the province of Normandy. One considered a time to name it “Flowering ash-Lower”, before choosing his current name.

The legend wants that the rocks with broad of Arromanches-the-Baths took the name of the El Salvador (become Calvados with the wire of the linguistic deformations), ship of the Spanish Invincible Armada which would have been failed there. But this name would come rather from the two backs ( dorsa in Latin, rise), which with broad appeared bald people ( apple-brandy in Latin) because of weak vegetation, thus being used as reference mark to the sailors.
