Appius Claudius Pulcher was the son of Appius Claudius Pulcher (Consul in 143 av. J. - C.) and the father of Appius Claudius Pulcher (Consul in 54 av. J. - C.).

In 88 av. J. - C., it is Préteur. He was a defender of Lucius Cornelius Sulla. He is exiled the same year by Caius Marius during the civil wars, while Sylla was in war against Mithridate.
- In 84 av. J. - C., it returns to Rome, after Caius Marius died.
- In 79 av. J. - C., it is Consul, chosen by the dictator Sylla before abdicating.
- Between 78 and 76 av. J. - C., it is governor of the Macedonia.
It was married with Caecilia Metella Balearica Minor (girl of Quintus Caecilius Metellus Baliaricus) and was the father of Appius Claudius Pulcher, Claudia Pulchra Prima, Gaius Claudius Pulcher, Claudia Pulchra Secunda, Claudia Pulchra Tercia (which changed its name into “Clodia”) and Publius Clodius Pulcher, which changed its name into “Clodius”. The choice of two of his/her children to change the vowels in their name reflected the movement of some of the members of most ancient the gentes Roman to support the dialect Plébéien Latin , which used “O” instead of “with the” Patricien.
