Summary

In the Years 1950, Jacques, a teacher of province, go in family, like every year, in the small town where he lived the period of the occupation to make a number of clown there. When André, the large friend of Jacques, realizes that the son of Jacques does not have fun much during the spectacle, he tells him their history which caused this vocation of clown.

One then reconsiders the period of the end of the German occupation to France. Jacques and André are good friends, with the beautiful Louise who deals with small coffee that the two men attend. On an impulse, they will make a ridiculous act of resistance. But this act will give them desire of greater ambition, more especially as it acts for both " rivaux" , to allure the beautiful Louise, they thus will explode a railway control unit of shunting. For that, André will place the explosive while Jacques draws the attention of the guard, which it will do using a catapult and of grimaces. Unfortunately, the control unit was not empty, and the old railwayman present does not draw any very well. But the two men go the knowledge only later.

The evening even, the trio celebrates this " victoire" around a so rare cassoulet. The Germans make irruption then and take the two men, as several other people of the village to make a group of 4 hostages who will be shot if the authors of the misdeed do not denounce each other. For prison, they are thrown in a hole full of mud, in a career. Their companions in misfortune will not even believe them when they say that they are guilty. To save them, there remains to them only the pity of the railwayman who is dying on a bed of hospital and which will claim to be the person in charge of the explosion, but also a German soldier who, full with humanity and of humor, will help them to exceed this moment thanks to his clowneries which will be worth death to him…

With the return in the theater, the little boy sees of another eye his father remaking the clowneries of this German soldier and thus includes/understands the direction of this vocation, which is far from appearing as ridiculous as he thought it.
