Appalachian Spring (ballet)
Appalachian Spring is a Ballet composed by Aaron Copland in 1943. Choreography by Martha Graham according to a poem of Binder Cranium, it was created on October 30th 1944 with the Library off Congress of Washington.
Because the orchestra pit was narrow, the original orchestration counted only 9 cords, a Clarinette, a flute and a Basson. The part will be later transcribed by the type-setter for a Symphony orchestra.
The ballet tells the history of the American pioneers at the dawn of the 19th century. The main themes are inspired largely by the traditional music of the time, in particular the Shaker Dance , which is used as melody bond between the eight movements of the part.
Music
The part cuts out in 8 movements, associated with scenes with the ballet:- Very slow (largissimo), presentation of the characters, associated each one with a Sharp instrument
- (long-lived)
- Moderato , duet for one been engaged and its applicant - scene of tenderness and passion
- Allegro , folk topic, with the style Country
- Still faster , dance Very slow solo
- (begun again)
- Shaker dance , scenes of daily activity illustrated by traditional musics (topic with the clarinet followed by 5 orchestral variations). Edward D. Andrews had published this melody under the title The Gift to Be Simple , also known under the name Simple Gifts
