Apophis
Apophis is a god of the Egyptian Mythologie.
God of the bad forces and the night, personification of chaos, the evil seeking to destroy divine creation. Its name Aapep or Aapef (as an Egyptian) meant " géant" or " snake géant". It is precisely represented in the shape of a gigantic snake which attacks daily the boat of Re sailing on the Noun, in order to put an end to the process of creation, but it is each time overcome. Each rising of the sun thus marked the victory of Re over Apophis.
Re was helped to push back Apophis by other divinities: Seth was indicated by Re to defend the divine boat using a harpoon, Isis, in front of the solar boat, used its capacities to deprive Apophis of its directions with an aim of disorientating it, which allowed the cat Re, personification of the goddess Bastet, to decapitate the snake. In rites intended to push back Apophis and the other harmful powers, small figurines on which was engraved the name of Apophis were thrown to fire. One frequently finds images of Apophis bound and transpierced arrows.
It is possible that it is the explanation which the Egyptians of Antiquity found to explain the phenomena of eclipse of the sun which represented as many combat temporarily lost by the god Re.
