Apollonios of Rhodos

Apollonios of Rhodos , in Greek Ἀπολλώνιος / Apollốnios (Alexandria, 295 - 215 av. J. - C.), Greek poet and grammairien .

Disciple of Callimaque de Cyrène, it composes a long epopee, Argonautiques , which moves away from the lesson of its Master and aims at approaching Homeric simplicity . Rejected by Callimaque, it is exiled with Rhodos where it founds a school of rhetoric. At the same time, it works over again its poem. Returned in Alexandria, he is success and Ptolémée V Épiphane names it directing Bibliothèque of Alexandria, in succession of Ératosthène.

Argonautiques were very appreciated Romains, and were a source of inspiration in particular for Valerius Flaccus.
