As a former officer of the 11th hussards within the British armed , it had access, as well for Stalingrad as for Berlin, with the Soviet files, which were inaccessible until 1991. Thus it renewed in-depth the military and political history of the Second world war.

Criticisms

Berlin - the fall 1945 had to face strong criticisms in Russia to see this article of Telegraph and in other countries. The Russian ambassador in the United Kingdom denounced the work like a " mensonge" and a " calumny against the men who released the world of the nazisme". O.A. Rzheshevsky, professor and president of the Russian association of the historians of the Second world war, showed Beevor of practically ressuciter the racist and discredited points of view historians néonazis, who described in their time the Soviet troops like " hordes of submen asiatiques" :

the central themes of this work - not by the place that they occupy there, but by their range - are really the brutal atrocities made by the Soviet soldiers and officers against the German populations, the resurrection of the image of the " hordes asiatiques" , which was hammered in the head of the Germans by propaganda Nazi, then later by an small group of historians Néonazi S, whose Germany was diverted for a long time. The principal conclusion of the book, from which the author carries out the totality of his discussions about the brutal atrocities made by the Soviet soldiers, and particularly the rapes of German women, are contained very whole in this passage: " The image of soldiers carrying torches ignited above the faces of women terrant themselves in a bunker, selecting their victims, is characteristic of the totality of the Soviet armies having operated at the time of the battle of Berlin (p.326) " (although the book uses the words " seem to be commune" and not " de" is characteristic;).
