Antonio of Castro-Mayer

Monseigneur Antonio of Castro-Mayer is a bishop roman catholic, born on June 20th, 1904 with Campinas (State de São Paulo) and died on April 26th, 1991 with Campos (State of Rio de Janeiro), with the Brésil.

He is known mainly to have belonged to the Coetus Internationalis Patrum, group of prelates traditionalist at the time of the Concile Vatican II, to have founded the Union Saint-Jean-Marie-Vianney in 1982, and to have been the bishop Co-consécrateur at the time of the sacrings of operated bishops on June 30th, 1988 by Mgr Lefebvre. Also it was excommunicated by the brief Marcellus dominus of the Gantin Cardinal to have taken part in a dedication of évèque without pontifical mandate. Itself challenged until its death the validity of this excommunication, calling upon the “case of need” to justify its act.

Biography

He studies theology at the Gregorian university in Rome and obtains a doctorate there. It is ordered priest on October 30th, 1927. As priest of the diocese of Sao-Paulo, it occupies the loads of professor to the seminar and of canon of the cathedral then it is named cleaned Saint-Joseph parish of Belem. He becomes finally general vicar of the diocese of Sao-Paulo.

Named in March 1948 bishop coadjutor of Campos, in the ecclesiastical province of Rio de Janeiro, he is crowned bishop on May 23rd of the same year.

He reaches the episcopal see of Campos in Brazil, on January 3rd, 1949. He takes part for this reason in the council the Vatican II. At the time of the important debates on the religious liberty, it joined the group Coetus Internationalis Patrum, where it is found with Mgr Marcel Lefebvre. This group criticizes the conclusions of this text " Dignitatis Humanae ", considering them nonin conformity with the Tradition of the Church. After long debates, this text is adopted by 2308 votes for and 70 against (of which Mgr of Castro-Mayer). During all the council, within Coetus, he seeks to make hear the traditional voice and defend the coherence of the teaching of the Church.

At the time of the installation of the liturgical reform of 1969, it obtains the permission to maintain the use of the rite tridentin in its diocese. It publishes in the review Fideliter in 1981, in answer to an investigation of crowned congregation of the rites:

  1. that in accordance with the conciliar constitution of the Vatican II on the liturgy, n° 54 and n° 36, the priests of his diocese " maintain the habit to celebrate the holy mass in latin" ;
  2. that in accordance with the n° 4 of the same conciliar constitution, which wants that " all the legitimately recognized rites are preserved and supported of all the manières" , the mass traditional, known as " tridentine" , is " celebrated generally in the parishes of the diocese .
It is reached by the age limit and resigns its load on August 29th, 1981.

Its successor, Mgr Etchandy Gimeno Navarro, decide to impose the liturgical reform as of his arrival. The tensions are such, that Mgr of Castro-Mayer decides to found a " union" under the term of saint Jean-Marie Vianney for the safeguarding of the old rite and the maintenance of the traditional doctrines.

It expresses its feeling on November 21st, 1983 by signing with Mgr Lefebvre an open letter with the pope Jean-Paul II.

Become very near to the movement of Mgr Lefebvre, it joint with him in its judgment of December 2nd, 1986 of the meeting of Base.

It takes part in the sacrings which Mgr Lefebvre carries out on June 30th, 1988. He declares during the ceremony: “ I want to express, here, my sincere and major adhesion with the position of His Excellence Mgr Lefebvre, dictated by his fidelity with the Church of every century. We two, we drank in the same source which is that of the Holy Catholic church, Apostolique and Roman ” It is then excommunicated, at the same time as Mgr Lefebvre and four the new évèques ones.

Withdrawn in the diocese of Campos within the Saint-Jean-Marie-Vianney Union, he dies on April 26th, 1991.

The Saint-Jean-Marie-Vianney Union joined the full communion with the Roman Catholic church on January 18th, 2002 and obtained the statute of personal apostolic administration.
