Antonio de Nebrija

Antonio Martínez de Calá (Lebrija 1441 - Alcalá de Henares 1522), more known like Antonio de Nebrija , sometimes under the name Antonio de Lebrija ( Antonius Nebrissen in the edition of Introductiones Latinae of 1501; and Antonius Lebrixen in the edition of Introductiones Latinae of 1481, Salamanca ), was humanistic and a grammairien Spanish.

Antonio Martínez, a Converso was born in old Nebrissa Veneria, called Lebrija nowadays, in the province of Seville to 72 km of the capital. His/her father was Juan Martínez de Cala and his mother Catalina de Xarana and Ojo. He had 3 brothers and 2 sisters. He changed his name into Elio Antonio de Nebrija.

He studied humanities with Salamanque and at 19 years, from went away in Italy, where he continued his studies during ten years with the Université of Bologna. Of return in Spain, he worked in Seville for the Fonseca bishop. He took then the load of professor, teaching grammar and rhetoric at the University of Salamanque. In 1513, it was named professor of the Universidad Complutense de Alcalá de Henares and was accepted the mission of working on the polyglot Bible complutensienne of the Cisneros cardinal.

Nebrija wrote on various subjects like cosmography, botany, and theology. It is famous for its efforts to reform the teaching of Latin: in 1481 it published a grammar, Introductiones latinae . Moved by the success of this book, it published famous the Castilian Grammaire in 1492. It was the first grammar of a popular language written in Europe. It dedicated this book to the queen Isabelle Ire of Castille. In 1517 it published the Règles of the Spanish orthography . It also composed of the dictionaries Latin-Spanish and Spaniard-Latin.
