Antonio de Pigafetta or Antonio Pigafetta , (1491 approximately with Vicence - 1534 approximately), is a sailor and a chronicler Italy N who took part with Magellan (Fernão de Magalhães) and Juan Sebastián Elcano in the first voyage around the world (circumnavigation).

Biography

Born with Vicence (Italy) between 1480 and 1491, Antonio Pigafetta, also known under the name of Antonio Lombardo came in Spain in 1519 where it accompanied the Apostolic nuncio, monseigneur Chieregati, of which he was the secretary. Recommended by the Apostolic nuncio, it went to Seville, where it enlisted in the crew of the armada (fleet) of Magellan, on board the Trinidad . It was one of the eighteen survivors of the tour, returning with Elcano on the Victoria .

Of what arrived and what he saw between his departure of Seville in August 1519 until his return to Sanlúcar de Barrameda (Cadiz) in September 1522, he gave an essential testimony in his Relation of the first voyage around the world . This relation is a true log book, doubled of a work of linguist. He indeed consigned, at the time of this voyage, the first lexicon of the Indians of Patagonie which he works out with the assistance of a captive Indian. Arrived at the Filipino , on the island of Cebu, it also consigns the language of the autochtones while raising their uses and habits, which makes of its newspaper a remarkable ethnographic document.

On its return in Italy, after having visited different course European, it is received Chevalier of Rhodos in 1523. It publishes its newspaper, written in Italian, interfered with Venetian dialect and Spanish, truffle of vocabulary collected in the Filipino islands . The oldest specimen of its work, gone back to 1525, is with the Bibliothèque ambrosienne, Milan.
