Antonio Magliabechi

Antonio Magliabechi (Florence, October 20th, 1633 - Florence, July 4th, 1714), is a Tuscan scholar and bibliophile .

Since the death of his father in 1640, he is apprentice goldsmith, then with died of his mother, in 1673, he resumes his studies near Michele Ermini, librarian of Léopold de Médicis and acquires a fame in the knowledge of the Latin, Greek and Hebraic writings.

The large-duke of Tuscany Cosme III of Médicis appoints it librarian of the palatine library of Florence (including/understanding the funds of the library of the Palais Pitti and the Bibliothèque laurentienne).

He constitutes a personal library of more than 28.000 works which he bequeaths by will to the town of Florence for:
" promuovere gli studi, the virtù, the scienze, E idiot the which pietà E it bucket universale, has beneficio universale beyond città E specialmente have poveri, chierici sacerdoti E secolari che not hanno modo di comprar libri E di poter studiare ".

François II of Tuscany decides to make there also deposit a specimen of all that is printed in Florence (1737) then in all Tuscany (1743).

The public library open to the public since 1747 constitutes the initial core of the BNCF, the central National library of Florence.
