Antonio Berlese

Antonio Berlese is a Italian Entomologiste , born the June 26th 1863 with Padoue and dead the October 24th 1927 with Florence.

Raise Giovanni Canestrini (1835-1900), it makes studies of Zoologie at the university of Portici and obtains a station at the agricultural Institute of entomology in 1903. Function which it preserves until its death. He works on the Insecte S vermin, in particular of the fruit trees. Among the 300 articles which it publishes during its life, it is necessary to quote the two books Gli insetti loro organizzazione, sviluppo, abitudini E rapporti idiot the uomo (in two volumes, 1909 and 1925) and the series entitled Acari, Myriapoda and hucusque Scorpiones in Italy reperta which appears between 1882 and 1903 and which counts 101 illustrated numbers nearly thousand boards, carried out by Berlese itself. He is a large specialist in the Hémiptères Coccoidea.

With his/her brother, Augusto Napoleone Berlese (1864-1903), specialist in the diseases of the plants and Mushroom S, they found the vegetable Revista di Patologia in 1892. In 1903, it founds the review Redia which it directs until its death. This publication wish to promote the zoological studies in the field of agriculture, the forests and the cities, with a prevalence for the Entomologie, the Acarologie and the Nématologie, to as well improve taxinomic knowledge of these groups as those of the means of fights against their harmful effects.

Its name is associated with a system of extraction of the small fauna of the ground, still largely used nowadays. The illustration opposite watch a diagram of its installation. The device is simple and rests on the fear of the light and the dryness of the live animals in the ground. A funnel ( E ) contains Litière ( D ). A source of heat ( F ), like a simple flashlight ( G ), heating the litter. The animals which it contains fleeing the desiccation of the litter go down in the funnel, a filter broad mesh prevents the litter from falling but not the animals. Those end up falling into a preserving liquid ( has ) contained in a container ( B ).
