Anton Drexler

Anton Drexler (June 13rd 1884 with Munich - February 24th 1942 with Munich) is a German politician , one of the founders and leader of NSDAP of 1919 to 1921 but quickly évincé by Adolf Hitler.

Origins

Anton Drexler is a Bavarian nationalist, he worked like ruler of machines before becoming metal worker with Berlin in 1902. With the bursting of the war in 1914, he is declared inapt for the combat, which will be reproached to him later.

Its political course before the foundation of the Deutsche Arbeiterpartei in 1919 seems little known. For the historian François-Georges Dreyfus, " It seems besides that Drexler belonged to SPD before 1914 ". However, it appears, that with the war, Drexler is convinced by the ideas ultra-nationalists of transitory the Deutschen Vaterlandspartei (DLVP) directed by the monopolistic middle-class and the preserving Junkers. Anton Drexler then takes the direction with Munich of intended organized labor, under the impulse of the mediums ultra-nationalists pangermanists, to try to conquer the working class with nationalism with the detriment of the Marxisme.

The creation of the DAP (the German Working Party, 1919)

Anton Drexler thus creates with Munich the Freien Arbeiterausschuss für einen guten Frieden (1918) ( free Comité of the workers for a peace fair ), local antenna of the " Free committee for a working peace allemande" created in 1916 by Wilhelm Wahl (leader of a committee of factory Krupp) with Bremen, in connection with the pangermanists mediums.

On this basis, the January 5th 1919, Anton Drexler founds the Party of the German workers ( Deutsche Arbeiterpartei - DAP) with Gottfried Feder, Dietrich Eckart and Karl Harrer. This last takes the head of the party. Dr. Paul Tafel (nationalist member of the Company of Thulé and plant manager MAN) had the appearance of a mentor of Drexler. At a meeting in September 1919 when Gottfried Feder holds a speech on the fate of Bavaria, a listener of the room violently claims the independence of this Land. At this point in time certain Adolf Hitler appears and dismounts one by arguments of this person. Drexler, impressed, approaches Hitler and proposes to him to adhere to the party. In October 1919, Adolf Hitler joint with the party (55e adherent), its talents of speaker enable him to become director of the propaganda of the party. To December of the same year, the relations between Hitler and Harrer are very tended within the DAP. January 5th, 1920, Hitler makes pressure and president Harrer resigns: Drexler succeeds to him the head of the party.

Withdrawal of Drexler, the creation of the NSDAP (1920)

Hitler, successfully, persuaded Drexler which the DAP should change its name into Parti national-Socialist the German workers (NSDAP): it is made thing on February 24th, 1920. They published the program of the " 25 points" , become celebrates then. In the program, the party refuses to accept the limits of the Traité of Versailles and claims the reunification of all the Germans. To reinforce their ideas on nationalism, the equal rights were to be only given the German citizens. During the summer 1921, Hitler is in displacement in Berlin to attend a meeting of German nationalists. Drexler benefits from its absence to show Hitler to want to in vain take the full powerss within the NSDAP, since on its return this last shows it slandering.

During the autumn 1921, Hitler then takes the direction of the party and Drexler keeps only one honorary station. There remains influential all the same within the Ordre of Thulé. Following the Putsch of the brewery of 1923 in which it does not take part, it is temporarily banished party then is submitted to the Bavarian Parliament in 1924 for another party, the Völkischen Block of which he is the vice-president until 1928.

At the same time, when Hitler writes Mein Kampf (1924-1925) in prison following the attempt at putsch, this one criticizes Drexler firmly. It notes: " Mr. Drexler was only one simple workman, a poor narrator and was not a soldier . " Hitler refers to the fact that Drexler had not been useful during the First World War and that it had not had its courage. Moreover, it adds that Drexler was not able to draw aside the political opponents of the NSDAP effectively. In 1933, it supports the arrival of Hitler to the capacity and returns to the Nazi party. It receives the badge Nazi about Blood in 1934, but it does not have any real influence and is not used that as tool of propaganda. Drexler dies in clandestinity in 1942.
