Antoine Pinay
Antoine Pinay , born the December 30th 1891 with Saint-Symphorien-on-Coise (the Rhone) and dead the December 13rd 1994 with Saint-Chamond, was a politician French 20th century.
Political career
Industrialist, he was mayor of Saint-Chamond (department of the the Loire) of 1929 to 1977. Its national career starts in 1936 when he is elected appointed of the Loire of democratic Alliance (right moderate), until 1938. He is then elected senator in 1938. He votes in 1940 the full powerss with the marshal Pétain. In 1941, it is named with the National council of Vichy, then decorated with the Francisque. With the Release, he is initially declared ineligible for his attitude during the war. But ineligibility is raised in 1945 (it is recognized to have sufficiently resisted to the Germans as mayor of Saint-Chamond) and it is elected in 1946 with the second constituent Assembly.Member of the National center of independent and country the (CNIP, right party liberal), it continues his political career during IVe and Ve République. Deputy of 1946 to 1958, it enters to the government as Secretary of State in 1948, then minister in 1950. President of the Council from March 8th, 1952 to August 23rd 1952, it launches a first national loan, guaranteed on gold.
It is candidate with the presidency of the Republic in 1953. In 1955, he is Foreign Minister and allows the independence of Morocco (Accords of That-Saint-Cloud) and opens the way with Tunisian autonomy.
In dissension with the policy Algerian and external of the government, it gives its resignation in January 1960. It gives up then any national policy activity.
In 1973 - 1974, it is the first Médiateur of the Republic.
He left the image of a careful and effective manager. Until the end of its long life (103 years!), that which one calls “wise Saint-Chamond” is consulted by many politicians.
In 1951, it Co-founds, with Jean Violet, the Circle (more known under the name of Cercle Pinay ), of which he will be president of the Fifties at the Seventies. He was also member of Opus Dei.
