Antoine Payen

Antoine Payen (Brussels November 12th 1792 - Turned January 18th 1853) is a painter and Belgian naturalist
His/her Antoine father says “the Old man” (1749-1798), architect and officer of the Genious, was Tournaisien of origin. When he dies, its widow returns to live our city with the young Antoine who is three years old. Its provisions artistic decide it to follow the courses of the Art school then directed by Piat Sauvage. It goes then to Brussels, and under the control of Henri Van Assche, becomes one of the most brilliant pupils of the royal Academy. In 1815, the Company of the Art schools of Brussels having organized a contest, Payen obtains there the first price for a paysae according to nature: Moonlight to Walk-the-Ladies . This success is worth to him to be named boarder of the king of the Netherlands, while its table is acquired by the government.
The king Guillaume, intending to install with $the Hague an Indian gallery, sharpens Payen painter of the Indies Dutchwomen in 1816 and sends it the following year for the Indies for purposes to reproduce the principal sites and monuments of the Dutch colonies. Payen settles with Batavia (Djakarta today) and, during about fifteen years, travels in the Eastern islands. During all his years, the painter will hold a newspaper reporting his birthday and his discoveries.
He brought back to Belgium an important collection of birds and insects which is currently with the Musée of Natural history of Turned.
On its return, Payen is established in Brussels and is devoted exclusively to the landscapes, drawing from the memories of its stays in the Indies the main subjects. He also traverses the Ardennes to paint. He was made a great fame by compositions with the gradations skilfully spared, the air and the light spread with profusion and the details treated with infinitely of care. Many of its tables are in the museums of the Netherlands.
Tournai has, after the dépat of Philippe-Auguste Hennequin in 1832, the Art school remained without director during six years. The higher course being taught more, the pupils deserted their artistic studies. In 1838, the Town council of the city worked out a new payment and called with the direction Antoine Payen in January 1839. This one fulfills the functions there of first professor of drawing, painting and sculpture. He could give fresh impulse and a certain glare to the establishment which he directed until his death in 1853.
