Antoine II of Monaco

This prince was the second Antoine of the Dynasty but was established under the name of Antoine Ist.

Antoine Grimaldi was born the January 25th 1661 with Paris and is deceased the January 20th 1731 with Monaco. It was prince with the death of his father Louis I {{er}} in 1707. Harcourt He was the son of the prince Louis Ier of Monaco 1642-1701 wire of Henri of Lorraine-Harcourt descending from the king de France Jean II and of Charlotte Catherine de Gramont 1639-1678

Marriage and children

  • Married in 1688 with Marie of Lorraine (1674-1724), girl of Louis of Lorraine, count d' Armagnac, and of Catherine de Neuville. Antoine II of Monaco and Marie of Lorraine had 6 girls, of which Louise-Hippolyte (1697-1731) and Margherita Camilla (1700-1758).

  1. natural Child resulting from Elisabeth Dufort (known as Babé), Dancer: Antoine Grimaldi, the Knight of Grimaldi (1697-1784); without alliance.
  2. natural Child resulting from Victoire Virtue, dancer with the opera of Paris: Antoinette NR… called Miss de Saint-rémy.
  3. natural Child resulting from a not identified lady of Provence: Louise Marie Therese Grimaldi (born in 1705, deceased with Sospel in 1723).

His/her father had, at the time of his embassy at the Holy See, spent of the immense sums. The prince of Monaco had to reduce his way of life and to leave the court of Versailles. Louis XIV saw it leaving with regret. “Good-bye, Mister de Monaco, say him it, count that you carry my regard, my friendship and my confidence”.

Épistolier of race, lit patron, Antoine Ier protected the musician Couperin and the painter Van Loo. He made build with Menton by Jacques Gabriel and Robert Cotte a charming small palace. “Skilful to torment itself”, the marshal of Villeroy writes, it drew aside many applicants with the hand of his daughter and single heiress, Louise-Hippolyte, which it ends up marrying with the count de Thorigny, Jacques de Goyon of Matignon of Breton origin .
