Antoine Danchet

Antoine Danchet , born with Riom the September 7th 1671 and died in Paris the February 21st 1748 is a dramatic author, librettist and dramatic poet French.

Biography

After having been professor of rhetoric to Chartres then tutor with Paris, Danchet renonça with teaching and started to write for the Théâtre. He gave some booklets of opera which, put in music by André Campra, had success. On the other hand its Tragedy S, poor imitations of Root, fell almost all.

Associated member of the Academy of the inscriptions and the humanities since 1705, it was elected with the French Academy in 1712 thanks to the protection of Mesdames of Ferriol and of Tencin. As some were astonished by this distinction for a also obscure author, one affirmed that it was granted not to the writer but to the man, who was indeed excellent and charitable, which inspired with Voltaire this epigram:

Danchet if formerly scorned,
Learns to the poor from genius
Which one can gain the Academy
As the paradise is gained.

Its works, published in 1751 (4 volumes in-12), contain, in addition to its dramatic parts, of the odes, the cantatas, the epistles.
