Antoine Bret

Antoine Bret , born with Dijon the July 9th 1717 and died in Paris the February 25th 1792, is a dramatic author French.

Fertile writer, Bret was exerted in almost all the kinds. He composed of light poetries, the comedies, the novels, the memories, etc a rather pure style, a great facility of invention, a criticism more clever than deep made him a reputation without raising it above the passable one. Hearing the dramatic art well, he wrote parts sinning nevertheless for lack of liveliness and comic force.

Bret was also royal critic for the operas.

Among his many plays, one quotes mainly Double Extravagance , comedy in three acts, in worms, represented in 1756.

There is moreover of him a certain number of gallant tales with soft tendencies morals like Cythéride (Paphos, 1743); Lycoris, or the Greek Courtesan (Amsterdam, 1746, 2 vol. in-12); it ***, history chatters (London, 1749, 1751); Memories on the life of Ninon de Lenclos (Paris, 1750, in-12); Test of moral and dramatic tales (Amsterdam, 1765, in-12); Theater ( ibid , 1765, in-12; 1778, 2 vol. in-8°); A tentative poetic with the mode, epistle with M ***** (Paris, 1770, in-8°); Eastern Fables and various poetries (Paris, 1772, 3 vol. in-8°). It gave an edition of the Œuvres of Molière with a rather good Commentaire on works of Molière , (Paris, 1773, 6 vol. in-8°; 1778, 8 vol. in-12).

One also allots to Bret the Beautiful Alsatian one, or Such mother such girl , a Roman libertine appeared for the first time with Amsterdam in 1745 under the title of Galanteries of Therese reporting the history of a gallant girl walking on the traces of his mother and often letting themselves lead by it on the way of the galantery, and frequently reappeared under titles different of 1745 with 1803.
