Anti-tank dog
The dogs anti-tank device (also called dog-bends or dog-mine ), were famished Chien S attached to explosives, trained to go to seek food under the tanks. By doing this, a Détonateur (generally a wood end) was activated, starting the explosives, killing the dog and destroying the tank.
The dogs were pulled by the Soviet Union during the Second world war to be used against the tanks Nazis. They were not nourished during several days, then trained to find what to eat under a tank. The dogs learned quickly that they were to run under a tank placed to find their food there not far. Once trained, they were attached to explosives and were released in front of enemy tanks and other vehicles. When the dogs went under the tank - the armor-plated part vehicle - the load exploded.
The Propaganda Nazi and Western post-war generally claim that this program did not have much success. The Hundeminen , as called them the Germans, had been involved with Soviet vehicles, and during the battles it could be disorientated and go under the Soviet tanks. Others were frightened by the noise which the tanks made and fled.
According to Soviet sources, the dogs anti-tank device destroyed three hundred German tanks. They were rather effective so that the Germans take measures to counter them. The Mitrailleuse S in top of the tanks were not precise enough due to the relatively reduced size of the dogs and the fact that they were rather low, fast and difficult to see. One gave the orders to the soldiers to kill any dog which they saw. Finally, the Germans recourirent with Lance-flame S to move away the dogs, which was more effective - but not always, certain dogs not stopping.
In 1942, a great anti-tank quota of dogs was disorientated and went in all directions, endangering all those present in the battle and forcing the withdrawal of a whole Soviet division. Little time after, the dogs anti-tank device was withdrawn the service.
The anti-tank training of the dogs continued at least until June 1996.
