Anti-riot police

The Anti-riot police is a subdivision of weapon of the French National police which was created in 1921, at least in her current structure, because the creation of the first units of Anti-riot police goes back to the beginning of the 9th century. Its main missions: the Guarding, the maintenance and the re-establishment of the order, guard of significant points (Embassy S, Station S,…), occasionally to help the departmental Gendarmerie and since a few years maintaining external operations (Opex or tourism abroad).

Organization

The Anti-riot police is made up since the territorial reorganization of:
  • 7 areas of Gendarmerie of which the force of Anti-riot police and intervention (FGMI) in island-of-France.
  • 25 Squads of Gendarmes mobile including 1 grouping armor-plated of Anti-riot police in Versailles Satory
  • 123 squadrons, each one ordered by a captain.
  • 1 Grouping of safety and intervention of the national police (GSIGN) which gathers GIGN, EPIGN and GSPR, formed integral part of the Anti-riot police.
  • 7 special groups of safety.
  • 17.350 personnel.

A mobile platoon of gendarmes (EGM) is composed of:

  • 121 personnel.
  • 4 groups of row including 1 Group of Intervention (pi) and 3 groups of walk.
  • 1 group Except Row (Logistic and Administration).

There exist nothing any more but 2 types of squadrons: squadrons carried and squadrons VBRG (armored vehicle with wheels of the Gendarmerie). The VBC90 (armored vehicle of combat gun of 90) were reformed.

Each squadron is differentiated according to a number, ex: 15/6 with Nimes.

  • 1st figure = number of the mobile squad of Gendarmes of membership.
  • 2nd figure = number of the squadron in the grouping.
  • 3rd figure = number of the ex legion of membership (today area of Anti-riot police). It is not planned to renumber these EGM in the immediate future.

Reservists of the Anti-riot police

The reservists of the Anti-riot police are gathered in squadrons of reserve of anti-riot police (ERGM) whose denomination and organization are copied on those of the squadrons of active, for example ERGM 124/1 with Houses-Alfort. One can as add as the reservists are people of the civil world who come for the lure of gain, in short to some extent of the mercenaries…

  • 1st figure = 1 for the squadrons of reserve
  • 2nd figure = number of the mobile squad of Gendarmes of membership
  • 3rd figure = number of the squadron in the grouping
  • 4th figure = number of the area of membership.

The reservists of the Anti-riot police are not authorized to be used for the maintenance of law and order but are employed on missions of service of order at the time of great events or in reinforcement of units of the departmental Gendarmerie.

Whereas their legal framework of employment to be been useful in maintenance of law and order in the past limited the use of the reservists of the Anti-riot police to reinforcements to the units of the departmental Gendarmerie or to the staffs, the squadrons of reservists from now on are brought to be useful in unit made up, i.e. in complete Escadron.

Year

Although there exist some women Officier in the anti-riot police, the use of Sous-officier is not open for them. It is, in France, one of the only trades, with that of Sous-marinier, still prohibited with the women. It is yellow Surnom mée “it” because of the gilded color of its gallons, and not because this subdivision starts to be sinicized.
