Biography
Anthony Mann begins his career, teenager, as actor then manager of theater. In 1934 it founds the Stock Company , troop in which will play in particular James Stewart. In 1938 it is recruited by the Selznick International Pictures to supervise the tests of actors on films like Gone With The Wind or Rebecca . He becomes then assistant of Preston Sturges with the Paramount, then carries out its first film, Dr. Broadway . He then will connect Série B, comedies and black films for the RKO and Universal.
In 1947, it turns Desperate first of its films of which it will have written the scenario.
In 1950 it carries out its first Western.
It ratifies the rules of the kind at the sides of the John Ford, Howard Hawks, Henry Hathaway, by equipping nevertheless its heroes with personalities plus ambiguities. Like the latter, it benefits the best from the cinemascope by filming big spaces.
It registers its westerns in a traditional vision, even “sensationnalist” of the kind. Above all: action, and lovesong in backdrop. He does not seek to develop or to restore a version repenting the relationship between colonists and Indiens, he does not even tackle the question. But the importance of its films is based on the fact that its heroes are very often characters whose turbid past levels (James Stewart in the Starvers , Gary Cooper in the Man of the West ), much more ambiguous than the universal prototypes of John Ford. They are complex characters, in search of repurchase and recognition of themselves. Its films also relate to the pioneers as such and their ambiguity, delivered to them-even vis-a-vis nature. The throbbing brutality of the characters marks essentially the western of Anthony Mann, aspect that Sam Peckinpah will develop still more. It besides is admirably incarnated by James Stewart which will turn under the direction of Mann in eight films, including six westerns.
The cinematographic work of Anthony Mann is completed on a failure. the Fall of the Roman Empire , ambitious production, will exceed the realizer by casting and the means which are put to him with provision. He dies suddenly during the production of Maldonne for a spy who will be finished by the main actor, Laurence Harvey.
