Anthony Braxton

Anthony Braxton , born the June 4th 1945 with Chicago, is Compositeur, improviser and multi-instrumentalist: saxophonist, clarinettist, flutist, pianist… He is the author of a work vast and complex, primarily in Jazz, but he also made free Improvisation, orchestral music, and he wrote opera S. He was member of the AACM a long time (Association for Advancement off Creative Musicians), co-operative of musicians of Chicago.

In 1968 Anthony Braxton recorded For Alto , the first album entirely played saxophone only. The pieces of this album were dedicated, inter alia, with Cecil Taylor and John Cage.

Its music developed according to several axes: as an improviser, it was registered, as of the medium of the Années 1960, in the innovative current of the Free jazz (or new thing ). It systematically inventoried then a vocabulary and developed strategies of play which brought it closer to the free improvisation such as it started to be practiced in Europe. What an important stay in Paris in 1969 sealed. Parallel to these explorations, carried out only or with small units, Anthony Braxton did not cease confronting itself with the tradition of the jazz by interpreting standards, often drawn from a repertory associated with the “  école  ” Tristano. It was even the essential stake of its Piano four-bit byte, formed during the Années 1990. Lastly, Braxton always spared a space of meeting and dialog with improvisers of all horizons : in testify to many duets. As a type-setter, a rich catalog of more than 300 numbers of opus attests its protean research, undertaken with constancy and rigor. One can, schematically, distinguish three axes from sound travail : the inventory of a vocabulary and isolated musical gestures, the establishment of various syntactic procedures and the creation of combinative connecting between them of connecting them or by superimposing them of the parts which, taken separately, take a character of “  études  ” (of sounds, ornaments, rates/rhythms). This work in particular developed in the four-bit byte which dominated the Années 1980 (with Marilyn Crispell, Mark To draw up and Gerry Hemingway). Lastly, since 1995, Anthony Braxton composed and played almost exclusively what it calls Ghost Trance Music, which introduces into its music a regular impulse, a linear deployment of obsessing and repetitive nature, and also implement the simultaneous execution of several of its pieces, laid out in layers. A mystical speech of influence underlies the majority of its work which he lengthily explained in his bulky writings ( Tri-Axium Writings ).

It is also an enthusiastic player of failures.

Tyondai Braxton, his/her son, is also musician and fact part of the New Yorkean group Battles.
