Anthology of Banks

The Florilège of Banks ( Banks' Florilegium ) is a collection of Gravure S on copper plates of plants collected by Sir Joseph Banks and Daniel Solander whereas they accompanied the captain James Cook in his voyage around the world by 1768 to 1771. It collected plants with Madeira, with the Brésil, in Ground of fire, in the islands of the Company, in New Zealand, Australia and with Java.

The specimens of Banks and Solander were studied on board the Endeavor by Sydney Parkinson. He drew each species and taken note of their colors, and for certain species he carried out illustrations with the watercolour. On its return to London, Banks engaged five artists to create watercolours starting from all the drawings of Parkinson. Then between 1771 and 1784, it engaged 18 engravers to carry out Gravure with the feature on copper plate according to the 743 completed watercolours. The Anthology was not printed the alive one of Banks and it bequeathed the plates to the British Museum.

Some of these plates were finally printed. Between 1900 and 1905, British Museum published impressions with the black ink of 315 of engravings of plants, under the title of Illustrations off Australian Plants . Others were published in black and white in the book of 1973, Captain Cook' S Florilegium . The first complete edition colors of the Anthology was published of 1980 to 1990 in 34 parts by the editions Alecto Historical and British Museum. Only 100 units were put on sale. The plates were printed using a technique of the 17th century known as with the headstock in which each color was applied directly to the plate, the exactitude of the colors being controlled according to the notes of Parkinson and of the opinion of botanists of British Museum. Each plate required one week of two months of preparation. Parts 1 to 15 include/understand 227 plates concerning the Australian flora, and parts 16 to 34 relate to and other area South America of the Pacific.

Documentary on the voyage and the publication of the Anthology, Banks' Florilegium: The Flowering off the Pacific , was published in 1984. He was told by the Australian Robert Hughes. A book on the subject, The flowering off the Pacific: Being year account off Joseph Banks' travels in the South Seas and the story off his Florilegium , of Brian Adams was published in 1986 by British Museum.
