Ansar

The Arab word of origin ansâr indicates the companions Mahomet, new converts with Islam originating in Yathrib (Médine), to distinguish them from the muhâjirûn mecquois being itself expatriates of Mecque to join Mahomet.

At the time preislamic, the town of Médine was still called Yathrib. It was a group of hamlets located in a fertile oasis. Two Arab tribes, Aws and Khazraj, arrivals of the Yemen, exerted the preponderance there on three Jewish tribes established in the oasis. Mahomet makes adopt with the inhabitants of this city the Constitution of Médine, defining the relations between the Moslems and nonthe Moslems. But within the Moslems there remains a distinction between mecquois (muhajirûns) and médinois (ansârs).

The competitions between ansârs and muhajirûns will have a maximum at the time of the choice of the first caliph. After the death of Mahomet in 632 “the body of the Prophet was not washed yet, that already the dissension rose in Médine”. Abû Bakr, Abû `Ubayda and `Umar went to meet the ansârs in the name of the mecquois. Abû Bakr made the point that the prophet had said that “the function to chair cost the Quraych ites”. A Hadith comes to confirm this assertion: “`Abd Allah Ben `Umar pays: The Messenger of God said: The caliphate will remain among Quraych even if there remain only two people on ground”.

In some names of people one finds the nisba “ Al-Ansarî ” which means that the person was true a ansar contemporary of Mahomet, or that he asserts descent of such a character.
