History

Etymology

One does not know the true origin of the name of the town of Annœullin. But various assumptions were retained:

  • Anolinus was a Roman general under the reign of Néron. It completed important road works in the department. This assumption can be confirmed because by completing work for the extension of the Zone of Fontinelle, of the Roman vestiges were found in the basement.

  • Annœullin is near communes whose termination is " in". heim in German, hem in Flemish and ham in English wants all to say remains or home .

In the old documents mentioning the commune of Annœullin, one could read the names of: Anolinum, Ennelin, Aneulyin, Anulin, Annelin. But the dictionary of 1733 gives the current orthography of Annœullin.

Origins, legends and first traces of habitat

Preventive excavations made it possible to find traces of dwellings dating from the Neolithic era and the Gallo-Roman one. It puts an end to a belief which wanted that the territory of Annoeulin is occupied by only one large marsh. At the edge of the large marsh, primary dwellings were present. The marsh had two advantages:

  • a feeder advantage: presence of game, primary cultures.

  • an advantage of protection: difficult of access.

The excavations making discover traces of Gallo-Roman dwellings can also confirm the assumption of the origin of the name of Annœullin because Anolinus, Roman officer, could have sat in this commune.

But Annœullin could have had another origin like the deformation of German bottom " all man" revealing the trace of tribes saxonnes that Charlemagne would have off-set in the zone after their capture (about year 800).

Heraldic

In 673, the king of France Thierry III, making repentance of the murder of Leger saint, grants a charter in favor of the Abbey St Vaast of Arras and grants the soil of Annœullin. The dependence with the Benedictine abbey will last until the French revolution.

It remains about it today as signs only the blazon of the commune which was that of the Saint-Vaast bishop.

  • Blazon of Annœullin: Gold to the cross moline and alaized of mouths .

First mentions of Annœullin

It is necessary to wait the 12th century to find mentions written of the soil. The first of them goes up with 1165 where the bishop of Tournai conceded, with the abbey Saint Martin's day de Tournai, the church of Annœullin with its dependences with the number of which the Allene church (Annœullin belonged to évêché of Tournai under the old mode). Then, in 1169, a cartulaire of the Pope Alexandre III confirms the possession of Annoeullin in the goods of the Saint-Vaast abbey of Arras. One already sees appearing cleavage between what will be the Flanders and the Artois. Then, Annœullin will appear regularly in the accounts of évêché (1177, 1184, 1210, 1219, 1242, 1278). It should be noted that Mons-in-Pévèle and Don is frequently associated with these acts. The charter of Roger IV, lord of the manor of Lille in 1220, amongst other things will apportion the rights and civil responsibilities and penal between the lord of the manor of Lille and the abbey of Arras for Annœullin, Bauvin and Mons-in-Pévèle.
