Announcer of the House of Commons (the United Kingdom)
With the the United Kingdom, the Announcer or president is the personality which chairs the House of Commons Parliament, with the Palais of Westminster. The current Announcer, Michael Martin, took up duty in 2000 and was re-elected the May 11th 2005 following the general elections.
The function dates from the 14th century. The Announcer governs the debates of the Lower House, by granting the right to speak to the deputies. He is also responsible for the maintenance of law and order during the meetings, and can punish the members of the assembly who do not comply with the rules of them. Conventionally, the Announcer is not in favor and gives up any affiliation with his old Political party when it takes up duty.
