Populations occupied already banks of the Lac of Annecy between -4000 and -900 front J. - C. and they were especially farmers and fishermen.

The Celts Allobroges occupied in their turn the territories of the pre-Alps, the mountains of Savoy and banks of the big lakes. They very quickly had commercial contacts with the “Italian” territories. Occupied as of -121, Allobroges are definitively beaten by the Roman legions in -62 front J. - C. and their territory open with Roman colonization.

The Romans were installed starting from -50 on northern bank of the Annecy Lake, in the plain of the Ends, with the foot of the site of Annecy-the-Old man, and founded the town of Boutae (future Annecy), which gathered nearly 2.000 inhabitants between; it occupied a strategic position with the crossroads of three great Roman ways of communication (Italy, Geneva, Vienna cisalpine).

At this same time, a Roman owner of the name of Annicius - perhaps of famous and powerful family of Roman patricians, the Annici - below had an important baptized villa Anniciaca , located on the slope the Veyrier mount, with the current site of the chief town of Annecy-the-Old man, from where it dominated the plain of the Ends and the lake. The Roman villas were in fact of powerful farms which could gather more than one hundred of people.

With the weakening of the Roman empire, many cruel tribes, break through the Gaulle. The Burgondes occupied a certain time the area and left many archaeological testimonys, but the too many attacks, fires, plunderings and slaughters, rang the knell for the Roman city of Boutae, and with the population finishes by completion giving up the city to take refuge on the neighbouring hills.

The villa Anniciaca accommodated new inhabitants and was strengthened to protect its population, while continuing to live primarily of the farm. , Anniciaca knew its hour of glory, while becoming a true rural capital.

As from the year 1107, the new strengthened city of Annecy-the-Nine starts to take importance, old the Anniciaca , become Annecy-the-Old man his hegemonic position loses, and turns over to its agricultural occupations (vine, cereals, breeding), but guard a certain residential character, with many manors and relay of hunting, pertaining to noble and the middle-class men of Annecy-the-Nine.

The bell “the Savoyard one” of the Sacré-coeur to Paris was run with Annecy-the-Old man in 1891. This bumblebee, always one of largest of the world, weighs 18.835 kg, measures 3,06 m height for 9,60 m of external circumference, with a base width of 22 cm, and a leaf of 850 kg.

With the fastening of Savoy in France and the arrival of the railroad, the French wines come to compete with the wines of Annecy-the-Old man dangerously, but in fact especially the attacks of the Mildiou, then Phylloxéra lead to the reduction, then with the complete disappearance of the viticultural production, at the beginning of the 20th century.
