Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker

Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker , born in 1960 with Malignant (Belgium), is a dancer and Belgian choreographer Flemish. She is a major figure of the Contemporary dance Belgian and world.

Biography

In its childhood Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker studied the traditional ballet at the School Lillian Lambert of the dance and the music with Brussels. After its formation of 1978 to 1980 with the School Mudra (founded by Maurice Béjart), it leaves two years to the United States to off study with the Tisch School the Arts of the New York University where it discovers the postmodern dance American. During this American period, it is in contact with many artistic movements new yorkais. In others, the discovery of the Music of phase, known as Music minimalist, of Steve Reich will be decisive in the orientation of its choreographic compositions all with far from its career. Thus, after having obtained a sharp success with its part Fase (1982), a duet inspired by the compositions Violin phase (1967), Piano phase (1967), Like Out (1966) of Reich, it creates the Compagnie Rosas in 1983. Fase will become later a part essential of the contemporary repertory and always danced punctually by Keersmaeker 25 years.

The whole of its work is consequently closely related to an almost radical use of the music (traditional, contemporary, jazz, music of the world, folk music) like support first of its energy speech choreographic, rigorous, often purified but always emotional. Its dance develops thus on bases of scenic (circles, short spirals, diagonal geometries impécables) and sound extremely strict, and in permanent adequacy. For this reason, the music is very often played on line at the time of the representations.

Chosen like company resident with the Theater of the Currency, in Brussels, by its new director Bernard Foccroulle, the Compagnie Rosas settles there in 1992. In 1995, it founds the École P.A.R.T.S. (Performing Arts Research and Training Studios), in close cooperation with the Currency in order to theorize and transmit its choreographic language. After creations incorporating in its spectacles of the more theatrical aspects, Just Before (1997), or of the vidéos like Erwartung (1995), Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker makes a return noticed to the pure dance with the coin Drumming (1998), then its masterpiece Rain (2001) once again on the music of Steve Reich, Music for 18 Musicians (1976). Creations plus intimists will follow where Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker is alone on scene as for Once (2002) on the music of Joan Baez, or accompanied by some dancers as for Desh and Raga for the rainy season (2005) using the Indian traditional music and the masterpiece of John Coltrane, has Coils Supreme .

In 2002, Thierry De Mey realizes, for the twenty years of the company, a cinematographic version of Fase .

In 2004, it puts in scene the opera Hanjo of Japanese Toshio Hosokawa, with the Festival of Aix in Provence and declares: “There is in this music, a as close connection of complicity between the sound and silence as there is, for me, between the movement and the immobility. I see there also a very great saving in means, a desire of austerity, slowness”.
