History
After death in 1605 of its faithful Master of cavalry Henrik Wrede, the king Charles IX of Sweden gives to its widow Gertrud von Ungern 40.000 hectares of grounds. This territory forms today the essence of the commune of Elimäki, but the strip of land between Elimäki and the Kymijoki river were also property of Wrede. It is besides there that they resided, with the manor of Anjala. The area remains very little populated, and the river plays during 66 years the part of border between the Sweden and the Russia, of the Traité of Åbo (1743) until the Traité of Fredrikshamn (1809) which sees Finland yielded entirely to Russia.
The end of the 19th century sees a development of industry along the river, mainly of the factories of Pulp paper. Several centers of population emergent, mainly Myllykoski and Inkerioinen. The municipalities of Anjala (in the west of the river) and of Sippola (in the east) become very rich, obtaining right before the Guerre with Winter a new residential district built by Alvar Aalto in Inkerioinen.
For more coherence in town and country planning, the two municipalities decide to be linked in 1975 and become the town of Anjalankoski in 1977.
Today, industry dominates more than ever the city, Stora Enso, Myllykoski Paper and Metso remains the principal employers. The city, very dependant on this industry which returned it thrives, inevitably loses inhabitants in each plan of dismissal.
