Angoumois

The Angoumois (in Saintongeais Angoumouâ , in Occitan Engolmés ) is old a Province French, corresponding to most of the current department of the Charente. It also comprised some communes of current the Two-Sevres (Pioussay, Hanc and Bouin, resulting from the marquisat of Ruffec).

This province was established on the territory of the Roman Cité which had Icolisma for capital, current the Angouleme. It included/understood the following countries: Ruffécois, Cognaçais, Horte and Tardoire and part of Confolentais; and belonged to the possessions of the house of the Valois-Angouleme when they reached the throne of France.

  • Constitution of the city of Angouleme at the end of IVème century
  • Unification with Périgord and the Resident of Agen in IXème century and becomes one counted in 866
  • At the top of its power in Xème and XIème centuries (Guillaume III Taillefer and Guillaume IV)
  • counted becomes the object of a competition between the princely dynasties of the Plantagenêt S and from the Capétien S. Jean Without Ground removes the any young person Isabelle of Angouleme, only daughter of Aymar Taillefer, count d' Angoulême, in 1200. The king of France, Philippe Auguste, pronounces the confiscation of his continental goods (1202) what starts hostilities (See in particular Jean d' Angleterre#Conflit with the king of France and Arthur of Brittany).
  • counted is integrated into the Kingdom by Philippe Beautiful the in 1308. It passes to the hands of English in 1360 then is taken again in 1373.

  • Devient a Généralité in 1692 with an aim of better controlling the collection of the tax
